Considered a key player in the flowering of the Paris African scene of the Eighties, Pierre Akendengué is one of the grand masters of contemporary African music. The Gabonese composer has been putting the radically social concepts of his continent to music since the Sixties when he arrived in France. Akendengué’s return to Gabon in 1985 has not stymied his calls for a re-appraisal of African history, denunciations of corruption and subtle revisions of his continent’s traditions. In 2006, he released his 19th album “Gorée” which underlined his lifelong motto: “Art must be an instrument of liberation.”
